Caring for trees during the wintertime Part 2
As discussed in our previous article, caring for trees in the winter time is very important because of what could occur in the spring time. Cold weather damages trees and they’re branches.
Winter Drought:
Winter drought is a common problem especially among evergreen trees. Drought occurs when a tree loses more water than it’s able to absorb. This problem may be able to be remedied by placing mulch around the trunk of your tree. Mulch should slow down the decrease in moisture and it should be placed before the onset of wintertime.
Branches Breaking:
During the winter, wooden branches freeze up and become more brittle. This usually leads to them being more susceptible to breaking. As you can probably tell, this is a major hazard. Especially if you have lot’s of foot traffic on your property. A large branch falling can seriously injury or kill someone. It can also create tremendous property damage.
The best method to reduce liabilities from winter branches is to provide proper pruning during fall. This means hiring a tree care company to trim out dead, diseased, or rubbing branches. Doing this will greatly minimize any risk you may have after the winter time.
