How to plant trees or shrubs on a hillside
When planting a new tree or shrub on a hillside within your landscaping, you’ll have to utilize a different procedure than normal. Unless your shrubs or trees or planted properly, it’s possible that they won’t stay put due to the incline they’re placed on. With a few extra steps, you’ll be able to plant successfully on a slope.
The first thing you need to realize is that, when planting on a hillside or slope, roots and the trunk should be vertical.
Step 1) Build a terrace
You should cut into the slope and create a small, flat area. You can create this area by cutting into the slope and building it out with rocks.
Step 2) Plant Shrub or Tree
Strategically plant the tree or shrub within the soil. Make sure it’s planted in the right place so that the roots aren’t exposed.
Step 3) Build Berm to Hold Water
Add soil around the planted tree or shrub and make sure a small berm is created in order to catch water.
Step 4) Add Mulch
Add around 2-3 inches of mulch to hold the dirt and soil in place.
Step 5) Water Monitor
Watch the growth of your tree or shrub. Watering is an absolute must here.
