Growing a tree from seed
Growing a tree from seed can be a very difficult, yet rewarding thing to do. The two unique ways to grow trees are naturally or through forced germination.
Allowing nature to take it’s course is one way to grow a tree from seed. You need to make sure that the seed (s) your planting are buried in the soil at the right depth otherwise there will be a delay in growth.
Sometimes, more superior results can be achieved through forced or assisted germination. A few steps are required in order to kick start the actual process, these include:
A) Scarification
Seeds have a coating that makes them impenetrable to water and gases. This is the process of breaking down the coating and letting in chemicals to make it permeable to water and gas so that seed dormancy may end.
B) Cold Stratification
This is the process of simulating cold weather conditions that it must undergo in order for germination to begin.
C) Warm Stratification
This is simply designed to mimic a seed’s summer dormancy.
