How to Fix a Tree Wound?
Tree wounds can be caused by a number of things, from animals to equipment and more. When you see fresh wounds on the trunk of a tree, you can help tree wound repair by carefully removing the injured bark. This leaves healthy bark that is tightly adhered to the wood. Applying a dressing or tree paint is not a necessary tree wound fix and does nothing to heal the tree, only adding a visual fix. If you find an older wound on the tree, you can do the same thing by removing the old and injured bark to reveal the healthy bark around it.
When a tree wound occurs, it’s possible for fungus to enter it and cause decay. In a healthy tree, it will be isolated by special compounds to ensure that the infection does not spread. For this reason, it’s important to not remove decayed wood from cavities as a method of tree wound repair. Removing this wood could breach the special wall and lead to further decay.
If a tree has damaged branches from a storm, you can prune them right away to speed up healing. However, do not prune flush against the trunk as this can cause further decay. Another tree wound fix to avoid is filling cavities, as this will prevent the tree from healing itself.
